Inspirational Tips for Jewelry Creators

Helpful exercises if you find yourself in a creative slump.

A variety of pastel-colored beads

On most days you may feel like you’re bursting with ideas and concepts. Like an Energizer bunny, you may find yourself creating one jewelry piece after another. You just keep on going and going, never stopping to take a pause and rest. At other times, you may also find yourself with zero motivation and inspiration to create anything. It feels like no matter what you do you find yourself hitting a wall whenever you try to sit down and work.

You’ll be glad to know that both are legitimate feelings. All creatives do go through slumps and we understand that, hence, this article. Whether your struggles come from something physical or mental there are helpful exercises to help you bounce back.

Divert your attention from the task at hand

You don’t have to force yourself to work on your craft if you’re struggling through it. Instead, you can transfer your attention to something creative that doesn’t involve jewelry making. You can paint, sew, or cook if you know how. You can also choose to watch a movie or series and open yourself to different visuals for inspiration. You can also take a walk around your home or yard if you have one and just take in the beauty of your surroundings. Forcing yourself to do something you are not in the mood for will only leave you resentful. Taking a breather might just be what you need to rejuvenate your creative juices.

Write down your thoughts

Feeling stuck creatively can be an unpleasant experience. Free up the noise in your head by putting your thoughts into paper. It doesn’t have to be a structured piece – just be free and let your thoughts flow on paper. It doesn’t even have to be words. Doodling or sketching, in particular, is a great exercise to get your creative juices flowing.

Take yourself out on a (virtual) field trip

While a trip to an art museum or visiting a jewelry store is a great creativity-booster for any jeweler, due to lockdowns currently happening in many parts of the country those excursions may have to wait until things have settled back to normal. Thankfully, museums and many other attractions can be viewed from home during this quarantine period through virtual tours. Another great source of inspiration for jewelers is Pinterest. You may find yourself browsing through the app for hours with the many DIY tips on jewelry making and jewelry display ideas you can learn from it.

Enroll in classes online

For some, a lull in their production might mean there’s a need to upskill their talents. Fortunately, online tutorials abound online. You can find plenty of learning opportunities on jewelry making in sites like Udemy and Skillshare.

Just take it easy and wait for inspiration to come

Alternatively, you can just take this time to rest if you’re having trouble trying to come up with ideas for your craft. At this point in time, being kind to one’s self can help ease a lot of the tensions and anxieties you might be feeling so just take it easy for now. Allow yourself to slow it down and wait for inspiration to come.
