How to Create Jewelry Displays that Generate Sales

Build a successful business around your jewelry displays.

Smart retailers know that how they display their merchandise can have a lot of effect on their store’s earnings. It is no different for jewelry shops. Jewelers must find a way to make sure they are creating interesting setups that entice and eventually encourage their customers to buy what they are selling.

In this article, we would look at the various techniques to make sure your necklace display stands and other jewelry display setups are generating sales for your store.

Create visuals that entice shoppers

Jewelry by itself is beautiful but you still need to add a little bit of flair to your retail display space to make sure you are attracting buyers. Choosing the right tools and accents can go far when you’re trying to set up a profitable jewelry display.

You must always remember that your jewelry collection must be the star of your display and nothing else, so avoid prints and patterns that clash with your merchandise. Instead, use complementary colors to highlight the beauty of your jewelry pieces.

When it comes to using props, make sure they match the jewelry and theme that you are aiming for. Never let them overpower your merchandise so limit them to just a few pieces.

Speaking of props, you must always have mirrors around your store so that shoppers can try out your items.

Avoid overcrowding your jewelry displays

Speaking of overpowering, remember that less is more when it comes to creating jewelry displays that generate sales so avoid displaying too many pieces altogether.

You can create small nooks around your store to make sure you are able to showcase all your items. You may group them according to type, colors, or themes, but make sure they still blend well with each other and to your store’s overall look. You can also create interest by using varying heights and jewel display tools to showcase your merchandise. When style and care is taken into account, a necklace display can be used next to a bracelet ramp display, just as an earring display stand can be used alongside a ring riser.

Choose a flattering light source

Lighting is another tool you can use to amp up your displays. The right light and its placement will certainly make your jewelry merchandise brighter and much more beautiful. You can place your lights above your products or if you’re using jewelry glass cases, you can place your lights inside. Make sure though that their location does not cast a shadow on the jewelry so that shoppers can have a clear view of what you’re selling. Likewise, as mentioned in the article, How to Care for Precious Stones and Minerals, some jewelry pieces need to be away from heat to maintain their beauty, so go for LED lights as a lighting source as they are cooler and a much more energy-efficient solution that regular bulbs.

Get to know your customers

Knowing what sparks your customers’ interest can help a lot when creating a jewelry display setup for your store. To do this, you can check out past sales and see which products were popular with your customers. You can then use this information to see which products you should highlight in your displays.

Beyond this, make sure you’re providing a great service to your customers so you can be assured of repeat visitations and buyers. Aside from creating a retail space that’s cozy and enticing, the way you and your staff treats customers determines whether your store succeeds or not, so take these tips to heart and good luck!

How to Care for Precious Stones and Minerals

Helpful tips to make your precious collection last a long time.

A variety of gemstones laid on top of a violet cloth.

So you’ve finally amassed an enviable collection of precious stones and minerals – make sure you’re doing what you can to make them last for years to come. Using the right jewelry display and storage tools is just the beginning. You also need to make sure you’re keeping them clean and protected from damage so they can maintain their beauty and shine.

We’ve listed below a few helpful tips to help you clean and care for your stones.

Pearls inside a gumball machine.

Pearls

Keeping your pearls clean is pretty simple – just plain water (chlorinated water is a big no no) and a non-detergent soap will do. Using a soft cloth dipped in soapy water, wipe your pearl to clean. For storage, keep them away from other jewelry pieces to avoid scratching its surface. Also, avoid air-tight containers such as a sealed up plastic bag. Storing them somewhere that’s too dry will lead to cracks, so use a soft pouch for storing instead. If you plan to display them, make sure to keep your pearls and jewelry display away from heat.

Turquoise

Keep your turquoise stones and jewelry beautiful by cleaning them using soapy water, but don’t soak it. Turquoise absorbs water which can soften it over time. Instead, use a soft cloth moistened with the soapy water and gently dab it on your piece. You don’t have to buy any special solution as these simple products will do. Let it air dry once you’re done.

Silver

You can use any of the commercially-available silver polish solutions out there to take care of your silver pieces. Just use a lightly damp soft cloth to spread polish on the surface. Remember to rub in an up-and-down motion to avoid highlighting scratches. Once done, you can rinse your silver jewelry in warm water, then pat it dry using a clean cloth.

One tip to keep tarnishing away is to wear your silver jewelry often, as friction (in this case, skin and/or fabric contact) slows down tarnishing.

Tourmaline

You can soak your tourmaline pieces in warm, soapy water and then gently brush it using a soft brush (could be a child’s old toothbrush). Remember to brush in a circular motion to make it shine bright.

As with many precious stones and minerals, heat can affect the color of tourmaline, so remember to place your jewelry display holders away from sunlight. Better yet, store your tourmaline away in a box or safe but make sure to use the dividers to keep them away from your other stones.

Amethyst

Keeping your amethyst crystal clean is similar to the steps in cleaning tourmaline. You can soak amethyst in soapy water for up to 20 minutes to loosen dirt, then use a soft brush for a more thorough cleaning and polishing. Rinse it in clean water then pat dry it in using a soft cloth. You can also air dry, but avoid applying direct heat like using a blow dryer.

Garnet

Yes, soapy water can also clean garnet but alternatively, you can use rubbing alcohol. Constant exposure to sweat, dead skin, and lotions due to usage can leave your garnet looking dull. You can use these two cleaning options to keep your collection looking fresh and beautiful.

For storage, you can use individual jewelry boxes, or if you have to mix up different stones together, make sure they are kept inside small pouches or bags.

It requires intention and technique to make sure you are creating something that will be inviting to customers. The setup you create should be able to highlight the beauty of your collection. Follow the tips below and learn how to create a ring display that will “wow” anyone.

Use the correct lighting techniques

Your choice of lighting can make or break your setup. When you place them at the right angle, bright lights help bring out the sparkle in jewelry. In terms of lighting options, LED lights are your best bet. They do an excellent job of illuminating jewelry, plus it is an energy-efficient light source.

Hit the right angles

Speaking of angles, diamond rings in the round brilliant cut should have its light source at a 45-degree angle to show off its brilliance at all sides. Pay close attention to placement to avoid casting shadows.

Go with solid colors

You would want your rings to pop out so avoid intricate patterns and garish designs in your setup. Not only that but going minimalist would look better aesthetically as you can avoid having clashing prints on your setup. Don’t use anything that will detract attention away from the jewelry.

You can add a few props based on your chosen theme or concept, but don’t forget the tip before this one: go with solid colors and keep things simple.

Close-up of a woman's hand while wearing a diamond ring.

What’s the secret to making your jewelry collection last long and stay beautiful? Ask any serious jewelry lover that question and they would tell you that proper storage and safekeeping will ensure that your collection will last for years. Now if you’re just starting to build your collection, then you’ve come to the right place! Let this short article help you discover jewelry display and storage techniques.

An opened softly-lined jewelry display organizer.

Jewelry display cases with soft lining are your best bets

Remember that jewelry, especially those with pieces of gemstones are pretty fragile and can easily be scratched if stored improperly. For storage, we recommend jewelry organizers that have soft fabric lining to avoid damage. Make sure there are enough compartments for each item so that they don’t rub off on each other. For those items that are particularly delicate, like pearls, better keep them in their pouches for safety.

Avoid direct sunlight and humidity

Certain pieces are sensitive to heat and sunlight which can lead to early deterioration and dullness so it’s best to store them away from these conditions. Make sure also to keep them away from moisture to maintain their quality. Using an airtight container in a cool, dry place is the most ideal solution.

Separate your jewelry pieces by type

If you have a diverse jewelry collection, it’s best to look at their type and qualities to determine the best way to store them. Avoid mixing up pieces or piling them on top of another as different types may need different storage techniques.

Jewelry may be classified into two:

Brightly-colored costume jewelry and beads.

Costume Jewelry

These are made with inexpensive material and are often used as part of everyday wear. While many of this kind try to mimic the look of fine jewelry, they’re not made from real gems and metals. They’re okay to keep around on countertops for easy access. You may go for jewelry displays with a decorative flair to add character to your interiors.

You might also hear the term “fashion jewelry” being used to refer to this type of jewelry.

A man and woman in soft focus, with a close-up of the woman's hand showing off her ring.

Fine Jewelry

For special occasions, you won’t go wrong with wearing fine jewelry. These are made from real precious stones and metals, and naturally, they also come with expensive price tags. They are more than just accessories but investments, so they must be stored safely away from prying eyes. Aside from keeping them in jewelry boxes and organizers, hiding them in a safe is recommended. For added peace of mind, getting jewelry insurance will help protect you from loss and damage.

On the other hand, different types of jewelry may also require specific display and storage requirements:

An easel-type necklace holder used for displaying jewelry.

For Necklaces

To avoid knots or getting them all tangled up, you must hang your necklaces vertically and separately. You may choose from jewelry display stands with hooks or easel-type necklace holders with carvings to keep your pieces in place.

A rotating jewelry display stand in metal for dangling earrings.

For Earrings

Your choice of jewelry display and storage tool will depend on the type of earrings you have. Stud earrings are best stored in individual cushioned cases while dangling earrings are best suited for stands where they can hang freely.

A multi-tier jewelry display stand made in wood.

For Bracelets and Bangles

You can choose a multi-tier jewelry display stand, such as the one shown here, or go for a rack or boxed tray to store away your collection of bracelets and bangles.

A tabletop jewelry display stand for rings.

For Rings

A tabletop ring display stand, like the one shown, can make for a cool and interesting jewelry display tool. For safekeeping, individual boxes are your best bets.

A pair of pouch bags in burlap used to store gemstones.

For Individual Stones

Keep them away from the elements by storing them in pouches or by using individual boxes. Doing so not only protects your stones from damage, but it also helps in keeping them organized.

Don’t forget to clean your organizers and holders

Your chosen jewelry display or storage tool must also be kept clean so it can perform its job well of keeping your jewelry collection safe and beautiful. Depending on the material, there are different cleaning techniques you can apply to your organizers.

What You Need to Know About Opening a Jewelry Pop-Up Shop

Helpful advice and insights for first-time jewelry pop-up shop owners.

Looking to expand your online jewelry business? Home jewelers interested in putting up a brick and mortar business may want to try it out first with a pop-up shop. It’s a great way to test the waters so to speak, but before you start pulling out your merchandise and jewelry display racks, here are the stuff you need to know.

So what is a “pop-up shop” exactly?

A pop-up shop is a small retail space meant to run on a limited time, typically lasting one or two weeks in duration. It is often the first step taken by online stores looking to expand their businesses offline. Its temporary nature gives them the experience of running a micro store without having to deal with all the processes of opening an actual physical store.

There are other reasons why a business would want to go and set up a pop-up. For many entrepreneurs, it is often a brand-building initiative that can lead to more exposure. For others, pop-ups are a way for them to test out new products and designs. Likewise, a few businesses would open pop-ups to take advantage of peak shopping seasons.

A female shop attendant at a pop-up shop or flea market.

It’s all about location, location, location

Scouting for your pop-up store’s location should be your first order of business. Naturally, you would want to be where there’s heavy foot traffic. You can also look at your regular customers’ profile and set up shop where they mostly hang out. Your pop-up’s location should also feel right for your brand, so you better allot a day or two for site inspections.

Next, find out whether your target area has already hosted pop-up shops before. This means it’s much more likely that you will be allowed to occupy that space for your store.

You can also try going online to look for available spaces for your pop-up shop. Sites like Storefront and Uppercase, in particular, are great starting off points for your hunt.

Work on your store’s logistics

Once you’ve secured your location, find out what else needs to be done to make your store fully operational.

Here are the essentials you need to work on before your first day:

  • Some pop-up venues would already have everything set up for you, while some would expect you to bring in your own props and furniture. Find out the exact arrangements for your store to avoid issues.
  • Make sure you’ve secured the required permits and licenses in order.
  • Having a design concept for your space ahead of time would save you from headaches during preparations, but make sure it reflects your brand and merchandise well.
  • Create buzz around your pop-up by posting teasers and advertisements online and offline.
  • Remember to bring enough merchandise to sell and the right jewelry display tools to showcase your items. This also includes bringing around retail selling must-haves like labels, price tags, pens, papers, record books, etc. Have a look at our list here to make sure you don’t miss out on anything.

On the day of the event, you need to:

  • Bring in manpower to help you in the various aspects of running a pop-up store. Have someone ready to help in the set up, selling, security, and promotions.
  • Be calm, cool, and collected. Remember to be engaging and attentive with your customers, and don’t forget to smile.

At the end of your operations, don’t forget to:

  • Turn over any items lent to you by the organizer/retail space owner.
  • Pack up everything. Check to see if there are any missing or broken items.
  • Take the time to evaluate your experience and figure out if goals were met or there are areas that need improvement.

5 Things You Need to Ask Your Customers When Selling Jewelry

The right questions will help you make the right jewelry recommendations.

Close-up shot of a pair of hands wrapping gifts.

Gift shopping at a jewelry store can be pretty daunting, even more so when it’s for a special occasion like an anniversary or a proposal. Naturally, shoppers would want an expert’s opinion to make sure they’re making the right choice. Not everyone starts out as an expert though so this article is for newbie jewelers who need a little bit of guidance to help them guide their customers.

Here are some tips to help you pick out jewelry that anyone would be happy to showcase on their jewelry display stands.

It’s important to ask your buyers questions before making a recommendation, but what are the essential details you should know about?

The customer’s relationship to the receiver

Before recommending any piece of jewelry to your customer, ask first about their relationship to the receiver. While jewelry is typically seen as a romantic gift, it is also a popular gift choice for family members and even between close friends so you better be clear about who would end up receiving the purchase.

The gift’s purpose

Remember also to ask about the purpose of the gift so you can make the appropriate recommendation. For instance, shopping for a regular birthday gift is entirely different from shopping for an engagement ring so asking for this information beforehand will help.

The receiver’s personal style

Taking into consideration the receiver’s personal style preference is a wise move to ensure the right jewelry pieces are recommended.

Like clothes, jewelry styles are diverse. Depending on their size, design, and colors, jewelry can say a lot about the wearer’s mood or intention so it is important the gift giver takes these into consideration. On the part of the jeweler, knowing this crucial information would help them pick out the pieces to recommend to their customers.

A long-haired woman wearing a purple and gold necklace.

The receiver’s skin tone

Buying jewelry is a lot like buying makeup – you need to make sure the color of the item matches the user’s skin tone.

Gemstones and metals in yellow and orange shades look great on warm skin tones. Meanwhile, those with cool skin tones are best suited to wear blue and purple gemstones or white metals like silver.

The customer’s budget

It’s important to know your customer’s budget for their purchase, but do be careful when discussing this issue. Instead of asking your customer outright if he/she is on a budget, you can instead ask for a price range to help you suggest the appropriate jewelry pieces.
